Jason Levin is an Oregon school teacher that started a website called “Crash the Tea Party” in spring 2010.
Crash the Tea Party’s objective was to organize people to infiltrate the Tea Party rallies in order to create uber-embarrassing moments that would catch the media’s attention.
The now defunct site claimed to be part of a national movement to “dismantle and demolish the tea party by any nonviolent means necessary.”
Levin himself said that he planned to attend Tea Party rallies dressed as Adolf Hitler, carrying signs bearing racist, sexist and anti-gay epithets and acting as offensively as possible — anything short of throwing punches.
Other means that he proposed to embarrass the Tea Party and/or harrass its members:
- Attend rallies with purposely misspelled protest signs.
- Ask Tea Party rally participants to sign a petition renouncing socialism. The intent was to collect as much info as possible: name address, DOB, Social Security number, etc. Levin anonymously wrote on his website: “The more data we can mine from the Tea Partiers, the more mayhem we can cause with it!!!!”
- Take extreme positions and push them to even extremer levels. In an April interview with Talking Points Memo (TPM), Levin said “Our goal is that whenever a Tea Partier says ‘Barack Obama was not born in America,’ we’re going be right there next to them saying, ‘Yeah, in fact he wasn’t born on Earth! He’s an alien!'”
Levin was under investigation by his employer for using school system resources to build his website and to pursue his political activities. He resigned last week (August 2010) rather being fired; Maureen Wheeler of the Beaverton School District adding: “He resigned in lieu of termination.”
Whether you like the Tea Party or not, or whether you like any organization or not, it is unAmerican to purposely seek to infiltrate and to represent them in a negative manner. This only begs the question of how much bad behavior is attributable to actual Tea Partyers or infiltrators intent upon creating embarrassing dirty tricks situations that may not otherwise exist except by the perpetrator.
