FUTURE | Monroe Doctrine, Chinese style … I Can See China From My Front Porch. All Of My Shopping Bags Are Full Of It.

China has more cash than it knows what to do with.

It could plow the cash into its own economy, but Chinese leaders
prefer to evolve rather than leap forward.

Still, cash is cash and you should profit from it. China is. Call it
American-style economic imperialism or whatever, but China is
investing heavily in developing Southeast Asia. It is doing so in ways
that makes it apparent to the people that China is bettering their
lives.

This is how widespread China’s influence is now: China has free-trade
deals with all 10 countries of the Association of Southeast Asian
Nations (ASEAN). The U.S. … well let’s just say we’ve thought that
such a thing might be good but we haven’t found our roundtuit yet.

In one study the upfront conclusion was: “China is grabbing much of
the new foreign investment in Asia, leaving its once-glittering
neighbors – Thailand, South Korea, Singapore – with crumbs… Some Asian
officials say they fear that Southeast Asia will be relegated to the
role of supplier of food and raw materials to China in exchange for
cheap manufactured goods…”

Foreign aid money pays big dividends. It did for the U.S. before we
lost our will to think about it.
